Port of Hamburg
Tavi sat next to Leon with her arms crossed. The car thundered with unpredictable speed on the lonely road. Not many vehicles strayed into the Port of Hamburg and if they did, they were mostly limited to magnetic levitation cars.
Tavi loved to look between the stacked containers. She used to like to fly at night through the port, which had something romantic and an indispensable dirtiness at the same time. She had discovered remnants of half-destroyed and looted boxes. That had deterred her less in the glow of the bluish night lighting than it did now in the daylight.
On this day, the blue lighting did not hide much. Most of the cargo that the workers were shipping belonged to government-owned ships. Only rarely did a steamer from the Far Eastern countries get permission to dock in Hamburg and then only to deliver new garments for the upper class. Forty years ago, Tavi had toyed with the idea of escaping on one of the old marine vessels to Asia. Then she had been living in London. But the strict control over direct journeys from London to Asia had meant far too great a risk, so she had returned to the European continent.
Tavi was pressed against the seat as Leon again accelerated the company car. “Perhaps a little more slowly?” She snapped at him.
“No.”
Tavi turned her face back to the window and groaned, indignant. She would not have thought that he could be so bitchy. But if he wanted to play that game … “And why not?”
“Because a dead man is waiting for us,” Leon shouted and threw the car into a curve without braking. The magnetic levitation car had noticeable problems staying on the track. The car vibrated and shook. Tavi’s knuckles turned white as she clutched the handle of the door. She imagined how they would be thrown from the track, how they would be unable to drive further and how she would have to add a car accident to the list of her own death experiences. A dodgy case, if they gathered up Leon‘s remains and wondered why he had been burned twice.
“Yup, he will probably insist on adherence to our meeting time. And woe to us if we‘re late for the rendezvous …” In Tavi’s mind‘s eye a skeleton tapped nervously with its foot bones and looked every few seconds at the tottering watch around his wrist. She giggled.
“That‘s not funny! A corpse is waiting there for us, a man died.”
The seriousness in Leon‘s voice reminded her that she knew the dead. Someone was waiting there who she had saved, only to now be found dead in the port of Hamburg. She gagged at the thought. “All right.”
She used the rest of the trip to prepare herself for the sight. A child would be waiting for her. No, now it had to be a young woman. As they turned onto the street, her stomach turned and for a moment she struggled with nausea.
